Field Visit by AKP to visit Survivors of Bonded Labour – (April 2024)

Aasha ke Pankh recently conducted a field visit to Ramanagaram to meet with survivors of bonded labour who have now emerged as community champions. These individuals that were once trapped in the cycle of bonded labour are now working as community leaders in their village. Through this they are actively working to ensure that their rights are protected and also are striving towards the well-being of the vulnerable populations in their region. During the field visit, the team members of AKP, listened to powerful stories of survival and transformation of these survivors. These survivors, having been freed from exploitation have now dedicate their lives to helping others in similar circumstances. The survivors provided in-depth insights into the evolving nature of bonded labour. Although legally abolished, bonded labour persists in subtle forms, often curbing individuals’ basic right to freedom of movement and dignity. The survivors narrated what freedom in the true sense means to them, after being rescued and rehabilitated.  Despite the traumatic experiences that these survivors have endured, the visit was filled with a sense of hope. Their resilience and transformation into community leaders show that even in the face of extreme hardship, people can rebuild their lives.
